He opened his eyes. Jerle Shannara was cradling him in his

arms, his strong face stricken. Preia knelt close, her eyes filled

with tears, her face streaked with them.

His hand found hers and held it.

Then, as he had done with Retten Kipp, he used his magic to

draw the air from his lungs. Slowly he felt his heart and his pulse

slow. He felt the destruction of his body slow as well, thwarted.

He grew sleepy. It was all that was left him. Sleep.

Darkness filmed his eyes and stole away his sight. He sighed

once. Death came swiftly, gently, and bore him away.
